Privacy policy
What this website and our games collect, why, and how to get rid of it. In plain English, because a policy nobody reads protects nobody.
Last updated 29 September 2026
This is the general policy for Broken Umbrella Games. It covers the website at brokenumbrellagames.com and the principles every one of our games follows. Each game also has its own policy with the specifics for that game — links are below.
It is written to be read, so it is short.
The short version
- This website sets no cookies and runs no analytics.
- Our games store progress against an anonymous identifier that is not linked to your identity.
- We do not track you across apps or websites, and we do not sell data.
- Where a game has no account, uninstalling severs the link between the stored data and your device.
Our games
Each game has its own privacy policy, because the games genuinely differ — one has no accounts at all, another needs a profile to work. The policy for a game is the authoritative description of what that game collects, and it is the one linked from its store listing:
- Stewry — Infinite Runner
- Sketchy Friends — in development
What they all share: no advertising SDKs, no cross-app tracking, and nothing sold on. An anonymous identifier is the default in every game we make, and where a game does need an account, creating one never requires your real name.
Removing game data is covered on the data deletion request page.
What this website collects
This site is a set of static files. It sets no cookies, runs no advertising scripts, and does not profile visitors.
It stores exactly one thing in your browser: if you switch the site to the dark theme, that preference is saved locally so the site remembers it next time. It is a single setting, it never leaves your device, it is not sent to us, and clearing your browser storage removes it.
Our hosting provider records standard server logs — IP address, page requested, timestamp, browser user agent — because a web server cannot serve a page without them. These are used for security and aggregate traffic counts only, and are not combined with game data or used to build a profile.
If you email us or use a contact form, we hold your message and your email address for as long as it takes to deal with it, and then no longer.
Purchases
Where a game is sold or offers in-app purchases, the transaction is handled entirely by the platform — Microsoft, Google, Apple or itch.io. We never see your payment details. We receive only what the store passes on to a developer: confirmation that a purchase happened. Each store has its own privacy policy governing that transaction.
Who else is involved
We keep the list of third parties deliberately short. Data may be processed by:
- Our cloud storage provider, which holds anonymous save data
- Our website host, which serves these pages and keeps server logs
- The storefront you bought or downloaded the game from
Each acts as a processor on our behalf, under its own security obligations. We do not sell, rent or trade data to anyone, for any purpose, and we do not share it with advertising networks or data brokers.
The processors involved in a specific game are listed on that game's own policy.
How long we keep things
Anonymous save data is retained while the game is installed. Server logs are retained for a short period for security purposes and then discarded or aggregated. Email correspondence is kept only as long as the conversation needs it.
Records of purchases may be kept longer where tax or fraud-prevention law requires it. Those records sit with the storefront, not with us.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- Access the data we hold that relates to you
- Correct anything inaccurate
- Delete it — see data deletion request
- Object to a particular use of it
Depending on where you live, you may have these rights under the UK GDPR, the EU GDPR, the CCPA or an equivalent law. We honour them regardless of where you are.
One honest limitation: because game data is stored anonymously and deliberately not linked to you, we often cannot identify which records are yours. That is the privacy guarantee working as designed — but it means an access or deletion request for an anonymous save needs details only the player would know. The deletion page explains what helps.
Children
Our services are not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will remove it.
Security
Data in transit is encrypted, and access to stored data is restricted. We also reduce risk by collecting as little as possible — data never gathered cannot leak. That said, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it. Material changes will be noted in the devlog rather than applied quietly.
